I am a writer of nonfiction for middle schoolers to adults, with several picture books, Busy Toes and Busy Fingers co-authored with Wendie Old under the pen name C. W. Bowie. I also supervise interns in a program in Administration & Supervision and write educational materials for the Center for Technology in Education, Johns Hopkins University.
After a trip to Kenya to research The Leakeys: A Biography, my husband Carl and I helped Jackson Minteeng Liaram, a young Maasai warrior, during his schooling to become a successful guide in the Maasai (or Masai) Mara in southern Kenya. Jackson’s culture, which he wants to preserve and protect, is one of the most exciting in the world. For more information about both of us, East Africa, and the winding road to writing a book, see my blog. For more about other books I’ve written and resources for teachers, students and parents, visit my web site. To see what I look like, here I am, holding a model of Paranthropus boisei (Zinj), a 1.8 million year old skull found by Mary Leakey.
