A while back I wrote:  Jackson is a young Maasai warrior who seeks to blend the modern technological with the traditional uncomplicated world of his people.  Wrong!

Since I wrote that, Jackson has risen to the position of junior elder, but, even more important,  I now realize that his traditional world is not uncomplicated.  It is differently complicated.  His wife Susan has been ill enough to require hospitalization for a night and then trips to a doctor.  Although the Maasai are masters with the use of herbal medicines, there are times when modern alternatives are needed and this was one.  Because Jackson has needed to focus on Susan and his family, I have not had many e-mails from him, but he did write that he took leave from his job and rented a car to take her on trips to and from the doctor’s.

Yet again, the difficulty of needing pure water and latrines was brought home to me.  Like other Maasai, the Liarams are a close-knit family and I feel sure others will pitch in to help care for their two small children, Mereso Sanau and Lesiamon, and prepare food to nourish Susan and help her regain her strength, but there is no doubt—lack of water complicates the situation.

Water from a nearby well would make life easier.  We must move ahead to bring a fresh water well to Oltorotua.
