In November I attended a one-day conference sponsored by Thomson-Shore, a small and medium-sized hard- and soft-cover publisher located in Dexter, MI.  I grouse that we writers do all the work for little pay.  Okay, I still feel that way.  However, a tour thru Thomson-Shore showed our group what is involved in actually printing a book.  Moving a finished manuscript to printed or digital pages is complicated and requires expensive, computerized equipment with folks who know how to use it to, as the Thomson-Shore motto says, “put your best book forward.”  Whether you want to self-publish or work with a publishing house, many publishing facilities are sprinkled around the world, so if you can see the production end of publishing, I recommend a tour.

Carlos Castillo, a fellow conference attendee, shared with me the photos you see here.  In return, I shared my Maryland-style recipe for Bloody (or Virgin) Marys (rim the glass with Old Bay seasoning instead of salt–delicious!).

Becki Buchanan at Thomson-Shore described the photos:  The first picture is the control panel from the 6/c press. The press sheet is laid down on the board and scanned to check the color density.  The 2nd picture is a view from binding line that does our case bound books.  The 3rd picture is the control panel from our Timsons Web Press.

  • This is great, Mary. Thank you for sharing. It’s easy to overlook all of the precision work that goes into printing and binding a book.

I hope you’ve had a wonderful holiday season.
