Oysters for Oltorotua

Well, no, we’re not sending oysters there. But seafood chowder and oysters will help fund the well/sanitation project.

Yesterday Betty and Jerry Kruhm joined Carl and me at the 46th annual Lexington Park Rotary Club Oyster Festival in Leonardtown, MD. Both Lexington Park and Leonardtown, along with Prince Frederick and Fredericktowne Rotary, are supporters of our Oltorotua well/sanitation project. Way back, Jerry, a member of the New Smyrna Beach Rotary, suggested I contact Paul Frey, then the 7620 District Governor, since Rotary has much experience digging wells in developing countries. And Paul put me in contact with Steve King, who I consider the King of Wells! The 2012-2013 Rotary International motto Peace through Service definitely describes Rotary work and without Jerry’s advice this project would never have gained traction.  Whew–it has been a long and winding path but I think we are again moving forward. (More on that later this week.)

Below are some photos we took that I think Jackson and the Oltorotua villagers will enjoy, since Steve Brown, Frank Faust, and Steve King visited in February to concretize plans for the wells. The villagers will be glad to see the guys and their colleagues at work to raise money for funding the project. We did our share by eating lots of the best seafood chowder I’ve ever eaten!

And here’s a photo of Carl and me after Steve explained his club’s newest project to us:  Restoration of oysters to the Chesapeake Bay.
